The reason Thundertree is an abandoned town rather than a quiet one.

Venomfang took the tower at the far end of the ruins and drove out everyone who hadn't already left. Daran Edermath knew about it back in Phandalin and said plainly that his adventuring days were too far behind him to do anything.

The druid's request

Red, a druid living among the ruins, told the party where the dragon was. He wanted balance restored to the town and would appreciate the thing being dealt with.

The party then tried to shake him down for loot. Red turned into a mouse and ran away.

The cult

While searching the apothecary for Mirna Dendrar's amulet, the party found a group of cultists holed up in a small house.

Fenro disguised himself as one of them with illusion magic and asked what they were doing. Dragon worshippers, as it turned out, preparing to deliver an offering to Venomfang and earn his favor.

Fenro offered to come along. The rest of the party followed at a distance.

The offering

Venomfang told the cultists they were insignificant worms and melted every one of them with a single breath.

How he fell

That breath was the mistake. With it spent, the party came out of the shadows and hit him all at once. He fought back and was overwhelmed quickly.

What was on him

His hoard held Hew — the axe that deals maximum damage to plant creatures, which Krunk has carried ever since.

Worth remembering

Hew has since saved the party twice: once against the shambling mound in the runoff pipe, and once with Gerald unconscious on the floor beside it.

A dragon they killed for treasure in session four is still deciding fights eight sessions later.
