Something like a beholder with fewer eyestalks, and considerably more enthusiasm.

It was elated to see the party. Its entire purpose in life was to watch someone light the forge, and nobody had come in centuries.

What it required

• Five nodes of power — they had them
• A vessel to contain the flame — they had that
• The flame itself — at the center of the cave

The last question

Before anything happened, it asked whether they were absolutely certain they were ready.

They were.

Worth remembering

It is the only creature in the entire cave that wanted the forge lit, and it got what it wanted. It is presumably still down there, satisfied.
