Wave Echo Cave

Where it all went wrong

The lost mine beneath the Sword Mountains, named for the sound of waves crashing somewhere far below — every thirty seconds, without stopping.

Hundreds of years ago it was prosperous. Then two wizards disagreed.

The old history

Urmon the Architect received a vision from an angel with plans for a forge that could create magic items, offered freely and with nothing asked in return.

Mormesk refused to believe it, and eventually raised an army of orcs and marched into the mine. The battle killed the dwarves, the orcs, and both wizards.

The Forge was left unlit. The mine became a tomb.

What the party found

Nundro Rockseeker Dead of head trauma. Cloak of protection.
The crab pool First node. Timed against the waves.
The bugbear camp Bought off for a few gold
The Black Spider Holding Gundren. Second node.
The rock ogre Traded gemstones for the third node
The deep pool Fourth node, and a giant octopus
The fungus chamber A pink flower, and a thing that grew more of itself when cut
The Requisition Clerk The tuning fork
The false coin altar The vessel for the flame
The Ghoul Chef Fifth node, for a pink herb
Mormesk The last warning, and a horde of zombies
The Spectator Keeper of the Forge
The flaming skull The flame, calmed with the tuning fork

The Forge of Spells

Five nodes of power. A vessel to hold the flame. The flame itself.

The spectator asked whether they were absolutely certain.

What the Forge made

A cold wind went through the cave. Every torch went dim.

What it actually was

The Forge was never a gift. It was always intended as the catalyst for a conduit between worlds — the door through which Diamabel would reach Faerûn.

Urmon died before finishing it. The party finished it for him.

The deal

Gundren still owes the party 40% of the mine's revenue once it's operational, in exchange for clearing it out.

The mine is currently in another world.
