The thing that came up through the brewery floor was not born a monster. It was made into one, slowly, by the work it was trusted to oversee.

Asterion

Urmon built the lair beneath the manor as a vent — a place for magical energies from the Forge of Spells to dissipate safely.

He charged Asterion with running it.

The discharges were having a detrimental effect on him. A worsening temper. Growing horns.

Urmon wrote it down, and kept building.

That happened before the Forge was ever lit. Whatever Mormesk was afraid of, it had already started, and there was a man in the basement turning into the evidence.

How he fell

Sealed in the maze for centuries, until the party bought Tresendar Manor and started construction on a brewery. The noise woke him, and he came up through the basement wall in a frenzy.

The party followed him back down through a labyrinth of rust monsters, a gelatinous cube in a pit, and a mimic pretending to be a treasure chest — then solved a six-rune door to reach him.

He did not go down easily. Gerald nearly fell. Krunk and Arthas finished it.

A helmed horror fought alongside him, guarding the lair for reasons nobody could explain at the time.

What was taken from him

Fenro crafted a magical knife from his horns. It deals additional damage when rushing an enemy.

Worth remembering

Nobody in the party has said his name out loud. They killed a monster in a maze and read about Asterion in a book, and never quite connected the two.
